Distance is a series inspired by Paul Klee’s 1914 watercolor In the Kairouan Style, Transposed in a Moderate Way. Created for LACMA’s “Remembrance of Things Future” initiative, the series explores the tension between structured grids and fluid color, echoing Klee’s balance of form and spontaneity. William Mapan translated analog textures into digital compositions that resemble aerial landscapes. His process involved painting with gouache and oil, then coding those tactile qualities back into his work.
